Nelson, Wisconsin, is located on Wisconsin Highway 35, the “Great River Road,” a popular tourist route that runs along the east bank of the Mississippi River. With a current population of around 400, the historical Village of Nelson is located on the east side of the Mississippi River, just across the bridge from Wabasha, Minnesota, at the junction of the Mississippi River and Chippewa River valleys.
Be sure to take time to visit Thrive! Park, a donated 25-plus acre, bluff top and bluff side park. Four major, unique prairie restorations are in the works on Nelson’s four bluffs. On the bluff tops and bluff sides are “goat prairies” that have recently been cleared as part of a larger prairie restoration effort around Nelson. The prairie restoration removes invasive and non-prairie plants and releases prairie plants to flourish in their native habitat.
Bring a picnic lunch along to enjoy after a hike of the park, then head north of town to an organic grain distillery to try their creations – you may even be able to catch live entertainment while you’re there!
Plan your visit for a day or an extended stay, as Nelson offers a number of boat landings, an RV park, a resort, eating and drinking establishments, furniture and other shopping, and more!
