Charles City

Experience the rich art, history and community spirit that Charles City, Iowa has to offer!

Charles City has a list of titles, as a Main Street Iowa Community, an Iowa Great Place, a STAR Community and more. The city is one of Iowa’s eight original Cultural & Entertainment Districts, featuring the art deco Charles Theatre and the Carnegie Library, now known as the Charles City Arts Center. More artwork from local regional and national artists can be seen on the Public Art walking tour, while the Mooney Collection showcases pieces created by Rembrandt, Picasso, Grant Wood and Salvador Dali.

The community is the birthplace of the gasoline-powered tractor and the girlhood home of suffragette Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, who is today considered a prominent historical figure in the context of women’s rights. Iowa’s first whitewater park and kayak course is located on the Cedar River in downtown Charles City, along with adjacent Riverfront Park.

Join in on the fun for a year-round calendar of events, including summer favorites such as Party in the Park, Whitewater Weekend and the July 4th Celebration. Charles City residents are always ready to roll out the welcome mat for visitors!
