Canton, located along U.S. Highway 52, is the first Minnesota city travelers encounter along this major north–south route. Founded in 1879 as a railroad stop, the town originally developed around agriculture.
Today, Canton attracts young families and retirees who appreciate its small-town atmosphere, affordable housing, and convenient access to nearby cities for employment and services.
The local business community includes a bank, restaurants, an antique shop, lodging, and specialty services. Visitors can also explore nearby Amish businesses known for handcrafted goods and farm products.
Canton’s history remains an important part of the community. The 1879 train depot, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflects the town’s railroad roots. The 1882 Mitson Museum, located in a former Main Street residence, preserves artifacts and stories that highlight the area’s heritage.
Community pride is also shown through the Veterans’ Memorial maintained by American Legion Post 400, featuring personalized bricks honoring local veterans.
Each year the Canton Community Association organizes several events. The most popular is the “Day Off” celebration held the third weekend in August, a tradition dating back to 1903 that features a barbecue contest, beanbag tournament, vendors, and live music. A Halloween dance in October and Santa Day with a lighted parade in December also bring residents together.
Nearby attractions include the historic 1856 Lenora Methodist Church and the surrounding Amish countryside, where buggies are a common sight along designated Amish Buggy Byway.
Abundant pheasant, deer, raccoon, and turkey populations, as well as great trout streams, make hunting and fishing a major attraction around Canton. Groomed snowmobile trails run through the area and city. For more City of Canton information visit cantonmn.com.
