Organizers have added two new events to the 75th annual Applefest schedule, September 15-17 in picturesque La Crescent, Minn.

The festivities light up the town on Thursday, September 14, with the first-ever Torchlight Parade. Entries will line up at Veterans Memorial parking lot and travel through downtown La Crescent, ending in the Crucifixion parking lot. The parade is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The annual King Apple parade takes place at 1 p.m. on Sunday. This year’s parade marshal is Doug Stavenau.

Be ready to shop at the first-ever Applefest Great River Makers Market which will take place at the La Crescent Area Event Center on Saturday, September 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market features 37 vendors who will be selling everything from children’s clothing, fishing-inspired products, local honey, lavender, pet products, skincare, jewelry, hone décor, essential oils, food and drink, accessories, art, books, bakeries, bath and body, candles, ceramics, plus a little bit of everything.

The stage comes alive as five La Crosse bands take the stage during Applefest! Kick up your heels as country band Blue Collar 40 kicks off the festivities on Friday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. followed by Something Familiar who will be playing your local tunes. On Saturday, Overplayed will rock the stage from 5:30-7:30 p.m. followed by country music band Hillbilly Rocketship at 8 p.m. Listen to the tunes of Daddy’s Girls – Round Two on Sunday from 5-9 p.m.

Include a visit to the La Crescent Area Historical Society History Center and Apple Museum for a slice of history. The museum is open Saturday during Applefest from noon to 4:00 p.m. Pick up a map at the center for a self-guided tour of the area’s orchards and apple stands located along the Apple Blossom Scenic Byway. While on the trail pick up a bag or two of crunchy delicious-tasting local apples and/or a jug of apple cider, and don’t forget a caramel apple.

Wearing of the green

August 7, 2023 by Visit Bluff Country

By Charlene Corson Selbee

The Irish music reaches the depth of your soul and will have your feet stomping and your body waving to the fast-paced music. You might jump up out of your seat and start dancing the jig. Plenty of Irish music will be at the 18th Annual Irishfest in La Crosse, Wis., August 11-13.

Take a selfie with Clancy at the 18th Annual Irishfest August 11-13 in La Crosse, Wis.
Photo courtesy of Irishfest La Crosse

Say hi to the green and orange-clad with red hair leprechaun, Clancy, and don’t forget to take a selfie with him. He will be roaming the fest grounds all three days.

There will be many free activities for the Wee Folks, including an arcade for 10-year-olds and up. Watching the little ones is sure to be fun!

There are also highland games for the adults, a tug-of-war competition, a mashed potato eating contest, Irish Road bowling, and a fiddle contest.

Don your kilts and register for Killian’s 5K Kilt Run/Walk Saturday at 10 a.m.

Purchase a raffle ticket or two for a chance to win a trip for two to Ireland, a 2024 Irishfest La Crosse VIP weekend package for two, or a beautiful Irish theme quilt.

The annual fest offers a unique opportunity to research your Irish roots. Suppose this is your first attempt at genealogy. In that case, volunteers from the La Crosse Area Genealogical Society will be available to help you, and the La Crosse Public Library archives provide access to library resources on the internet and at the local library.

The vendor’s market sports everything from Irish sportswear, jewelry, sweaters made in Ireland, kilts, belts, footwear, fairy and dragon figurines, Irish silver and pewter pendants, bracelets, face painting, body art, glitter tattoos, jewelry, bags, Irish gifts, and one-of-a-kind items made from used whiskey barrels.

Rumor has it you want to make sure you sample all the tasty food available onsite.

Other Bluff Country events happening this weekend:

•August 10, Rhythm by the River, Preston, Minn.

•August 10-13, Western Days, Chatfield, Minn.

•August 11-13, Irish Fest, La Crosse, Wis.
