Elkader

Iowa

Bed and Breakfasts, a bakery, great restaurants, and unique shops are waiting for you to come and enjoy all that we have to offer. Elkader has been recognized by the National Historic Preservation Trust and National Main Street Center through the “Great American Main Street Award,” earned the State of Iowa “Spirit of main Street Award,” and is designated as one of Iowa’s Great Places.”

Elkader was incorporated in 1891 in the valley of the Turkey River and named after Algerian freedom-fighter Adb el Kader. A beautiful keystone bridge, built in 1889, spans the Turkey River and offers a stunning view of the courthouse, also built before 1900. Nine of the oldest structures are now on the National Historic Register.

Scenery and history converge with the commercial district to comprise a vital, charming community like none you have ever seen. Elkader’s downtown is a designated “Cultural and Entertainment District” and is home to many unique specialty shops. Entertainment is also plentiful with performances at the renovated 1903 Opera House or enjoy movies at the 3-D digital Elkader Cinema.

Enjoy the Turkey river in a canoe or kayak, try the whitewater feature or paddle the river to the Mississippi. Experience rural, local annual events of Art in the Park, Sweet Corn Days, and Ladies Day Out. Bring a camper and enjoy a relaxing time in the campground, splash in the pool or stroll the trails.
