In the 1830’s settlers traveled to Elkader seeking a place of rich farm land, abundant water and a potential for commerce. Today, the heritage and vision of Elkader’s settlers is still alive and thriving. From shopping in our historic downtown district, walking or biking on our local trails or canoeing on the Turkey River which runs through the heart of Elkader, there is something to satisfy every age and interest.
Guests of Elkader can sample the charm and uniqueness of our bed & breakfasts or stay in our motel. Those who enjoy the experience of being close to nature will enjoy our two campgrounds in town. Besides the scrumptious food of a typical American-type restaurant, dining out can include the hearty fare of a sports bar and grill, a bistro, an Irish Pub with authentic cuisine, and NE Iowa’s only Mediterranean restaurant. And for those who consider shopping entertainment, there is everything from antiques to up-to-the minute boutiques.
Elkader offers live (in our fabulous 1903 opera house) or film (in our digital, 3-D cinema) entertainment. Is it history that interests you? We have nine locations on the National Historic Register and a first-class museum with artifacts extending beyond local history. Elkader has been recognized by the National Historic Preservation Trust and the National Main Street Center as a winner of the “Great American Main Street Award” and a State of Iowa “Spirit of Main Street Award.” Recently, it was designated as one of Iowa’s “Great Places.”
